Affirmations

Affirmation - A positive assertion.

The act of saying or showing that something is true.

Affirmations are positive phrases and statements that are meant to be used to replace negative thoughts. They are incredibly easy to use in everyday life. You simply create your own positive sentences or statements to hyper focus on a specific negative thought, concern or situation.

Then once you have your curated, uber upbeat and positive statements, you take them and you say them, over and over and over again. Yep, you just say them broken record style and by doing that you end up replacing that negative with the positive. It's a magical process!

Okay...let's be real!

Everywhere you look affirmations are made to look super simple. Harry Potter style, waving a magic wand and saying some words, outloud. "Evanesco" the negative right out of you!

The truth is affirmations are an amazing tool you should use in your self-love journey, but if you are anything like me you get a bit frustrated with the toxic positivity. The uber positive affirmations, "I love myself." or "Happiness comes easily to me." simply do not resonate with me. They are too rigid, absolute

and simply not believable

The way that I think of and use affirmations.

Using affirmations in my day to day life was found thru the tried and trusted way of failing, failing some more and failing again! I failed so much that eventually I just stopped. I put down the beautifully designed boxes full of them. I ripped all my post-its off my mirror and I stopped reading article after article. Looking instead to myself.

I spent time with me; thinking of how I learn, how I feel and especially how I talk to myself. I was honest with what felt right to me and what did not. Slowly I put together a way that worked for me. I made up my own rules or actually lack of rules, since for me there are no damn rules.

I do affirmations, I use them daily, but I do them MY OWN WAY.

My personal rules for affirmations:

Affirmations are not absolute.

Being human is incredibly complex. Oversimplified, positive statements do not take that into consideration. They are black and white in a world that is gray.

Affirmations must be believable.

"I am free of worry." Life without worry is not attainable. Are there ways to be living a life with "less" worry, of course there are but a life without any worry is simply not something possible.

Affirmations DO NOT have to be repeated on a rigid schedule.

Routine for my affirmations did not fit my life. My schedule is different every day. I would try like hell to take certain times of the day to stare at myself in the mirror and say my daily statements. Then when I missed a day, busy with work or my teenager, I would feel guilt which would make me feel shitty. I would then rush to do them; not really feeling them, which made them pointless.

Affirmations change over time.

From scheduling, to which words, to how I do them; this changes for me day to day, week to week and month to month. I get bored easily, so saying them every day, 3- 4 different times throughout the day, five times each time, staring at myself in the mirror - yeah, that is NOT going to work for me.

Affirmations

A positive assertion.

It's magic!

Okay, let's be real! (Please note, I go into deeper detail on this in my blog post Authentic Affirmations.) We make using affirmations seem like waving a magic wand, or in this instance some words, outloud, and  "poof" the negative right out of you, Harry Potter style!

The truth is affirmations are an amazing tool you can use in your self-love journey, but if you are anything like me you get a bit frustrated with the toxic positivity of them all. The positive affirmations, "I love myself." or "Happiness comes easily to me." simply do not resonate with me. They are too rigid, absolute and not believable. Happiness does not come easy to me. Happiness is a lifetime journey full of hard work, pain, joy and so much more.

The way that I think of and use affirmations in my self-love journey was found through my own learning, aka, failing, failing some more and failing again at them until I just stopped. I put down the boxes full of them. I ripped all my post-its off my mirror and I stopped listening to all the experts. Then I spent time with myself, thinking of how I learn, feel and talk to myself. Slowly I put together a way that worked for me. Yep, me! I made up my own rules or actually lack of rules, since for me there are no damn rules. I do affirmations, I use them often, sometimes daily, but I do them MY OWN WAY.

I encourage you to find your own way of using affirmations. You can google 1000 ways and read how I do them, follow all the advice, but in the end take the time to discover your way.

How I use affirmations:

- Affirmations are not absolute. Your experience as a human is incredibly complex, so

Remember all the witches and warlock movies you watched growing up? If you are like me, you watch the TV series "Charmed" (the original). The number one rule in speaking spells which are simply words that hold power, is that you must truly feel them deep down inside of you. They must come from a place that is full of love, hope & passion.

Below you will find different categories of affirmations that I have used myself and some new ones I have yet to use. They range from basic to more detailed. Take them and either use them exactly as written or as building blocks to make your own.

The categories are not normal ones, I am not a norm follower. You will know just by reading the category name if it will help you, as you will be drawn to it. Take what resonates with you and leave the rest. Each PDF comes with examples of how to use them, so you have it handy on your download. Always remember, find your way!

Go enjoy the magic of words!

"The most powerful words you will ever say are the ones you say to yourself. Choose wisely."
